Agra is a city on the banks of the Yamuna River in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh,India. It finds mention in the epic Mahabharata when it was called Agrabana, or Paradise. Tradition and legend ascribe the present city of Raja Badal Singh (around 1475) whose fort, Badalgarh, stood on or near the site of the present Fort.
However, the 12th century Persian poet Salman writes of a desperate assault on the fortress of Agra, then held by one King Jaipal, by Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni.It was ruled by Sultan Sikandar Lodi in the year 1506. Most people spend just one night in Agra and this is enough time to visit the Taj Mahal- you'll want to allow at least 2-3 hours, and the company of a government-licenced guide is strongly recommended- as well as Agra Fort and the Tomb of I'timād-ud-Daulah, often referred to as the 'Baby Taj'. While sunrise and sunset at the Taj can be remarkable if the skies are clear, this is not often the case in winter, so consider visiting either mid-afternoon or mid-morning and avoiding some of the crowds. The Taj is particularly busy at weekends, so this is worth factoring in if you're in Agra on a Saturday or Sunday.
If you have time, 2 nights, and a full day, in Agra opens up a whole range of other options. The quick nature of many tourist visits to Agra means that the old city area remains, again relatively, little-visited by tourists and retains a huge amount of atmosphere and tradition. A walking tour here, particularly early in the morning or in the evening, is sure to be very memorable. Another wonderful option is a countryside tour , visiting the area adjacent to the Taj where subsistence farmers live a very traditional life in the shadows of the Taj, but seemingly a world away from one of the most famous sights on Earth.
